‘Chhotu Charpai is a miniature version of the classic Indian folk furniture bed made as an invitation for Ayush Kasliwal’s, ‘Charpai Challenge’, an event supported by the Serendipity Arts Festival. A tiny ‘Mortise and Tenon’ frame is fitted onto four turned legs.
The weaver traditionally uses thread, rope or even seat-belt strapping in a myriad of weaving patterns, frequently leaving one narrow end of the frame unwoven and raised to act as a ‘pillow.’ Chhotu (meaning small), Charpai’s are a perfect desktop accessory, for holding pens and stationery. Unlike their full-sized counterparts, these miniatures are a scale model of the remarkable construction and versatility of the Charpai.
